Yale University is one of the toughest schools to get into and it should come as no surprise that the school’s golf course is one of the toughest golf course to play in Connecticut and possibly the country.
Built in 1924, the Yale Golf Course maintains its tradition of the classical golf style made popular during the Roaring Twenties and is seen today as one of the finest examples of such golf architecture that is now something of a rarity.
The reason for this being that Yale is an extremely difficult course. Penal is a word that comes up often when describing the Yale course, that and challenging. Lesser golfers have their work cut out for them as there are many blind shots to be made and the rolling terrain can easily hide a ball from view.
There is even a higher level of challenge with the course’s bunkers. Some are so deep that they possess a set of wooden stairs in order for the player to reach their ball! That’s assuming players are able to line their shots down the long narrow fairways lined with mature trees.
The signature hole at Yale is the ninth and it is claimed by many to be the epitome of the rough-yet-refined nature of the course. At 213 Yards, with a Par of 3, the ninth hole consists of a swell in the middle of the green with several slopes surrounding it. It is a beast to get into and thats only after the ball navigates the lake and the heavy forests on both sides. The shot has to be at least 190 yards if it is to make it to the hole. Accuracy and power are musts on the Ninth.
Every other hole is of mixed variety but one constant is the challenge. The Yale Golf Course is hidden gem among American golf and perhaps that is for the best…too many people would be broken on its greens.
