Sutton Bay

In South Dakota, there is a private estate that caters to may different activities. Hunting, fishing, and to great acclaim…golf. This place is called Sutton Bay and the Sutton Bay Golf Course is considered to be one of the best courses in the Mount Rushmore State.

Straddling the cliffs overlooking Lake Oahe, the course was designed by Graham Marsh and built by Bill Kubly and provides a fine example of inland links golf. While the lake may be the centerpiece of the course, it also takes time to wind through South Dakota’s beautiful plains. Utilizing a tried and true, out and back style along the man-made lake, the course introduces the player to many different facets of play offered by the landscape. Lae Oahe offers a consistent wind that is a signature of many of the seaside links courses. The first holes sit upon a mesa that sends the shots on direct course for the lake. Then, once the player hits the back nine, the natural elevation of the plains comes into effect, requiring a skilled game. Great care was taken to incorporate the land’s natural splendor into every hole.

Splendor might has well be the motto of Sutton Bay as the designer of the course made a conscious effort to incorporate natural beauty into every single hole. Whether it be the lake or the plains, the stunning views alone make Sutton Bay a worthy contender for any golfing bucket list.

Be prepared for a bit of a trek while playing though. It is said that Graham Marsh took a little more natural approach to designing the course and as a result the route in-between holes does not flow as well as if following a blueprint. That is only a minor blip though as the spectacular views and excellent design makes it all worthwhile.
