Pinehurst No. 3

The Second course may be the favorite at Pinehurst Resort, North Carolina, but that does not mean that every course is not the pride and joy of the resort. The grandaddy of Pinehurst, Donald Ross designed the No. 3. course in the year 1910 and made it decidedly different from the No 1 or No 2 course.

It is much shorter that the others, its maximum length measures at a 5’862 yards but don’t let the diminutive distance fool you…Pinehurst No 3, remains a terrific challenge where precision is valued over distance.

The greens on No. 3 are elevated and small and require a balance between accuracy and distance. Many of the greens mimic those found on Pinehurst No. 2, in fact, many players use the No.3 course to practice for play on No. 2. Bunkers and runoff surround the greens. Again…accuracy is needed if you want to make par on this one. According to the great golf player and course architect Tom Kite, the best way to play this course is to leave the drivers behind and only use your irons. This course is particularly geared to long and middle iron clubs.

If you are an amateur player, the No 3 course is a good place to start due the shortness of the course allowing players a more competitive play. In the words of Ben Crenshaw: “I just don’t think people understand just how good these holes are. They’re filled with interest. They’re shorter but there’s plenty of character to them.
