Montana, a state at the tippy top of the contiguous United States. Among the states, it has one of the lowest population densities in the country. As one can imagine, it is not a place where world class golf springs readily to mind. The Rock Creek Cattle Company will shatter that illusion of anyone who loves golf.
Being so far away from anything, the course is situated in middle of spectacular natural splendor. Soaring peaks from the Flint Creek Mountain Range and green forest filled with wildlife. Designed by Tom Doak, who is known for his minimalistic style, which is a necessity considering the natural beauty of Montana, employs a ‘less is more’ style on this walking course.
The course measures 7,466 at the front and 5,445 yards from the forward tees. The course moves with the land, creating a course with a great amount of contour and nuance, true to the fashion of a links course. Also true to the fashion of links courses, strategy is very important while at play. The fairways are wide and hide hidden curves and all the while the titular Rock Creek winds through the course, it all needs to be played well at the risk of your score. There is also the risk of fly fishers in the creek, so be careful with your shots. Also willing to gobble up the ball are the numerous bunkers that litter the course. Keeping in tune with Tom Doak’s go with flow style, the bunkers come with jagged edges and are built through bushes and rocks. This lends to the notion that the bunkers were always a part of the landscape.
After your game, the luxury of the Cattleman Club is waiting for you to enjoy some Elk Jerky. So get on up there, the rustic charm of Rock Creek is not to be denied.
