Valhalla Golf Club

When most people travel to Kentucky, they are probably in search of bourbon and the original fried chicken franchise. Another reason to travel to the Bluegrass State is to tee off at the Valhalla Golf Club.

Valhalla is the legendary Norse afterlife of great warriors who have fallen in battle. Among its golden halls they would drink and feast with their comrades in arms for eternity, awaiting the final battle. The Valhalla Golf Club may not be the afterlife but it is definitely a place where great tales of great skill are told and great champions arrive to challenge their comrades.

Valhalla

Designed by the great Jack Nicklaus, Valhalla is a links style course in the front nine but transitions to a more tree-lined, higher ground in the back nine. The landscape is a varied one, with over 62 sand bunkers dotting the landscape. The rough grass of the course is made up of a combination of fescue and of course, Kentucky Bluegrass. The front nine holes are challenging enough but popular opinion is that the back nine is where the real challenge begins. A test for great warriors in order to enter the glorious halls of the clubhouse, that utilizes both Midwestern and Southern styles. The 14th hole is a long par 3, protected by bunkers and is on an elevated, undulating terrain. Multiple championships, including the 1996 PGA, have been hosted at Valhalla, and the 18th and 17th holes are particularly scenic in order to accommodate multiple spectators. Thanks to multiple alterations over the years, the course remains a healthy challenge for every generation of golfer.

A tragically underrated course, Valhalla is truly a place where great championships can come and regale others with their tales of heroism. Thanks to the club’s reciprocal guest policy, almost anyone can be a champion.
