What image appears in the mind’s eye with the word Nebraska?
Corn?
You’re not alone. But alongside the corn, there is a place one can tee off for a very special game of golf.
In a style that seems to fit the state of Nebraska, Sandhills is a very humble, no frills course that is purely about the game of golf. Many course are more about showing off and real estate investments. Not Sand Hills, just natural land and a natural game.
The whole course was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, who desired to emulate the “Golden Age of Architecture” and while teeing off at the greens one can see such an aesthetic. The course is on a vast piece of Nebraska plain, with rolling terrain, natural dunes, and large meadows of grass. The holes are an excellent balance of various styles, par 4’s that are long and have big greens and the small greens on the par 3’s and 5’s. The best hole considered by many is the eighth hole, which is a par 4 on the short side. The back nine are considered to be top of the line by many players. The landscape is very challenging. Due to the fact that there are little to no trees, bunkers make up the majority of the obstacles and wind is an omnipresent factor. Those who have eaten outside at the clubhouse say they have trouble keeping the food on their plates.
The emphasis at Sand Hills is not extravagant landscaping but traditional, strategic, golf. The fairways are enormous, some nearly sixty yards in width. That combined with aforementioned wind, if your are not careful your ball could go anywhere.
Truly Sand Hill’s is a very unique golf course that needs to be played at least once. Set aside a date though…its only open eight months a year!
