The land of ten thousand lakes, also known as Minnesota, is a charming mix of both midwestern America as well the northern lifestyle, nestling at the 48th parallel. It is here that the Interlachen Country Club is found, a private course that has entertained golfers for over a century. The original architect was named Willie Watson but the course’s current style was created by famous golf architect Donald Ross a decade later.

Interlachen is a particularly panoramic golf course. Being in the land of ten thousand lakes, there are many water hazards to be had at Interlachen. The course consists of gently rolling hills and of particular note are the trees which cover the landscape. Weeping willows frame the myriad of ponds and lakes but many other varieties are to be found. So much so that a special rule regarding leaves has to be put into play at times.

The greens are on the small side and over half of them are elevated. Precision is required on the front nine as the majority of the holes there are rather short par 4’s, and there are a lot of dog legs on the back nine, the most famous of them being the par 5, ninth hole with a right facing dog-leg that hugs the shores of one of Minnesota’s ten thousand lakes.

All of this may seem overwhelming towards the average player but remember that Interlachen has played host to wide variety of tournaments and championships. The most famous of these was the 1930 US Open, an event that was re-created fifty years later. Interlachen has also hosted the 2002 Solheim Cup and the 2008 Women’s open. It all seems a little intimidating, perhaps rightfully so, but the hills and willows of Interlachen are ripe with possibility.

So get up there…the cool waters of Minnesota await.
