A man named Robert Home Smith from Stratford began to purchase land near the banks of the Humber River in 1909. By 1929, a golf course was completed under the name Royal York Golf Club. In 1946, the name was changed to St George’s Golf and Country Club.

The golf course was designed by Stanley Thompson, one of the most acclaimed golf architects of the era. It is eighteen-hole championship golf course, rated number 10 on the world’s greatest golf courses and the number one course in Canada. In spite of being nearly a century old, the course continues to receive praise from PGA Tour players and numerous golf publications including Golf Magazine and Golf Digest.

Being only a short distance away from downtown Toronto, there are multitude of lodging options for the so inclined that are sadly not available at St. George, but there are a multitude of dining options available that, in accordance with its British origins the St George Clubhouse is a premier establishment with accoutrements that exceed in elegance. There is the Royal York Lounger for casual dining after a long round of golf or for a more sophisticated meal, one can partake in the timeless elegance of St George’s Room.

It is not only golf that St George’s is known for. It is no secret that it can get pretty cold on the upper side of the International Boundary and golf is not a cold weather sport, especially when there is ice and snow. So in 1957, St George’s added a facility for a very unique sport…curling. Complete with its own lounge, bar, and locker room, this addition allowed St George to become a premier club throughout the entire year.

Summer or winter, St George’s Golf and Country Club can provide.
