Being so far north, New Hampshire is more known for its ski slopes than its golf fairway but that does not mean their aren’t some course here and thereĀ for players to enjoy. The Baker Hill Golf Club is one of them.

Even though the course opened in 2001 with only nine holes, Baker Hill, much like the state of New Hampshire itself, is steep in history that goes back to the very genesis of the nation. The club is named for the Benjamin Baker Farm which used to stand on the property. In fact, the former barns are now used as the club facilities. Benjamin Baker was an early settler to New Hampshire who fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill during the Revolutionary War.

In fact, he is buried in a small cemetery not to far from the first fairway.

Speaking of fairways, the course was designed by Rees Jones, whose style emphasizes definition and par is preserved as the course’s standard. Many holes are unique at Baker Hill, one in particular is the 504 yard, 15th hole. The hole has the courses sole water hazard and a risk-reward style of play. There are also some respectable par 4’s back to back on the 7th and 8th holes.

The Baker Hill Golf Club is a bit of a hidden gem of the North, combined with its relative youth compared to other courses, not much can be said about Baker HillĀ at this point. If it is, however, the top ten course in the state of New Hampshire, it must be doing something right!
