The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Resort

The premiere course of South Carolina is the course known as Kiawah Island. The Resort has several golf courses to be enjoyed but the most famous one of them all is the Ocean Course.

As evinced by its name, this course, designed by Pete Dye, nestles the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. It should come as a surprise to no one, that wind plays a constant factor on the course. Ten of the holes run parallel to the coast and the rest are parallel to them. The views may be spectacular but be prepared to pay the price.

The wind is not the only natural phenomenon to be aware off. The course has earned many accolades for its eco-friendly design. As a result, many critters make their home there, from alligators to snakes to even some bob cats. If your ball goes in the grass…may be best to let it go.

The course itself, stunning views aside, has been described as difficult but rewarding of good shots and not above the amateur player. There are multiple tee boxes for varying levels of skill, but even those accommodations may not be enough. Be prepared for a healthy challenge. The mental pressure alone is overwhelming.

No doubt this accessibility, combined with the challenge is part of what makes this course so famous. So much so, that since the beginning…The Ocean course has hosted many tournaments over the years.

The Ocean Course’s claim to fame was the “War by the Shore” the final putt of the 1991 Ryder Cup. The Ocean course has also hosted many other tournaments, including but not limited to: 1997 and 2003 World Cups and the 2012 PGA Championship.

The Ocean Course, what a wonder it is.
